Phuket is one of the southern provinces in west coast of Thailand. It’s the rainforest and mountainous island in Andaman Sea. Phuket consist of the country's largest island, and another 32 smaller islands which offer abundance of sandy beaches, clear water and stunning views. Phuket city, the capital, has many old shophouses and busy markets in the island. There are more than 5 beaches in Phuket island (such as Patong beach, Kamala beach, Kata beach, etc.). Patong is the most popular beach and area in Phuket for tourists. It's full of resorts, activities, entertainments, local shops, malls and a variety of water sports.

Phuket has a tropical monsoonal climate and it's warm all year round. Peak season is Dec–Apr, when the weather is a bit cool and dry. The monsoon season is May–Oct, with hot weather and heavy rain. So, the best period to visit is around Dec – Mar (around 24°C to 32°C)

Getting Around

Most tourists book in advance airport transfers on sharing and private basis. You can also find airport shuttle service desk upon arrival. There are many local operators with good service and most of the local driver can speak basic English. There is also private car with driver for hire per day or per hour, to take you from here and there and around the island. Prices are varied.

Public transportation is also an option if you don't have too many luggages, there are open-aired local buses called "Song Theaw" which you can hop on and off if you see one. They run regularly between 7.00 am and 6.00 pm. Standard cost for each trip to/from Phuket Town - to/from locations such as Patong, Surin and Kamala is around 15-20 Baht per person per trip (approx 0.70 USD).

Tuk Tuk also one of the popular option for tourists - A small size and speedy transportation, it's most suitable for short-distance as it can be uncomfortable and bumpy if you are going to travel for more than 30 minutes. Prices depends on the distance and negotiation with the driver before getting on them is highly recommended.

Taxis – One of the easy way to travel in Phuket, but it’s quite expensive and charge flat rates between towns.

Car hire also a good option if you would like to visit all area in Phuket or if you fancy a long drive up and down the hills of the island. Please bare in mind to be extra careful while you are driving as there can be many reckless motorbikes around like flies.


Main language is Thai, they use Southern Thai accent for communicate. English is also widely spoken in the hotels and resorts.

It's very common to tip 20 baht (approx. $0.70) in any local restaurants or any local excursions or activities service. Although in luxury hotels or resorts it's not compulsory but it's common and appropriate to tip from 50 baht (approx. $1.80) to 100 baht (approx. $3.30) or even more if you are happy with the service.
